Anandajit Ray

Anandajit identifies himself as a ‘surface painter’ of urban conflicts. His artistic approach is well suited to a dark, phantasmal worldview where the violence, pain and claustrophobia associated with urban living, tragically obliterate the humanizing aspects within the self. His work aims to juxtapose the past with dystopian present. Keen on experimentation, Ray’s diverse oeuvre is animated by a sense of surreal, with an underbelly of dark humor. Anandajit completed both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Fine Art College, M. S. University in the years 1989 and 1991.

He has exhibited in numerous shows nationally and internationally, at the Bangladesh Biennale (1997) and Manchester Art Gallery and Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, among many others. He has illustrated a book of short stories, ‘Wild Fire’, written by Bonophol (Seagull Publications). Ray has been awarded the Sanskriti Award (1999), the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant (Canada); and has also been nominated for the Sotheby’s Award. He lives and works out of Baroda.
