Writer’s Desk

The Writer’s Desk is a Gallery Ark initiative to encourage and support young Indian researchers and writers between the ages of 25 – 35 to develop a vibrant dialogue within the contemporary cultural ecosystem. .

Each quarter, three writers will be commissioned for a short form essay on the theme provided. The finalists will be selected based on the pitches and writing samples submitted. Writers will be required to respond to the prompts drawing from a rich reserve of cultural material – be it references to artworks, exhibitions, artistic practices, design and architecture, popular culture, performing arts, cinema, literature, anthropology and so on.The articles will be published on a quarterly basis on the Gallery Ark website in a separate segment dedicated to the Writer’s Desk. At the end of four such quarterly cycles, we hope to publish the essays in an anthology series.

Theme: Touch

The prompt for the first cycle of articles due to be published in January 2021 is “touch”; the sensation of skin-on-surface or perception of the tangible through its memory? We invite you to dive deep and explore how “touch” has in the recent (or historical) past been a point of inquiry, interest, or contention.
