Gulab’s work represents the most popular professions of India. Though small in scale, they are of huge importance in today’s world. Small business holders like vegetable and bangle sellers, cobblers, barbers, key makers become the hero in Gulab’s visual narratives and describe their own life skills within the familiar environment where they live and work.
In his work, Gulab also focuses on the issue of labour and tries to capture the worker in the moment. There are different layers of water coloured surfaces exploring multiple documentation of objects, products, their presentation, daily routines of the subjects, and the workspace of the trader or the labourer. Gulab’s visuals are descriptive of someone’s life in their workspace and the instruments, products, methods with which they serve the society with great, albeit often overlooked importance.
